Arc'Teryx Backcountry Academy
Overview
Exhibit studios designed and fabricated an outdoor trade show display booth for Arc'Teryx for the back country Arc'Teryx academy event in  Whistler and Squamish, British Columbia. The event showcased their new ReBird, ReGear & ReCare program which aimed to promote the upcycling of their products and educate patrons on sustainable consumer practices.

Design direction

Our clients envisioned a mid-size trade show booth that embodied elements typically seen in pop-up shop-style designs, infused with design elements akin to their physical retail spaces. This included spaces to showcase feature products, an open area for repairs, change rooms, and clothing racks for attendees to browse through, all while prioritizing modular elements for adaptability across future events.

Inspiration

Our booth drew inspiration from minimalist and modern geometric elements with a focus on natural materials like wood and steel, typically found in Arc'Teryx physical stores. The design translates their grid like, rectilinear elements into a smaller, modular format adaptable to different shows.

We prioritized easily navigable spaces with multiple entry points, dedicated wall space for branding and products, and an engagement space show casing how Arc'Teryx clothing is repaired and restored, highlighting the story telling aspect of the life cycle of their product.

Booth development

During development, we generated ideas based on our mood board criteria. Initially, we submitted three similar designs and floor plans to our clients, each embodying the aesthetics of pop-up shops and Arc'Teryx retail stores.

Refinements

After collaborative iterations with our clients, the final design of the trade show booth embodies a minimalist aesthetic, featuring a predominantly contrasting monochromatic color palette. This refined backdrop serves as the perfect canvas for a vibrant, graphic TV wall and showcases the client's equipment and clothing in colourful groupings against neutral grey walls, creating a dynamic and eye-catching environment.

Mock-up phase

During the mock-up phase, we assembled the core elements of
the booth structure using TOGA Grid connectors and cedar posts, providing durability and modularity. Clad with alumanate panels, with high-quality printable surfaces, this material palette promoted simple assembly and modularity for potential future additions or adjustments. This comprehensive approach allowed us to assess crate & shipping logistics, ensuring ease of assembly for clients.

Challenges and reflections

Since its launch in 2022, the booth's modular design has enabled it to travel across British Columbia, showcasing its versatility. Along the way, we've identified several areas for future improvement, including:
1
Providing replacement parts for damaged areas of the booth, including replaceable vinyl graphics
2
Incorporating lighter materials in future builds to facilitate on the fly changes for clients
3
Streamlining transport logistics by optimizing crate construction for easier transport
